FunnellVision - Injury Updates
Monday, March 9. 2026
Here are the latest injury reports for Monday, March 9, 2026.
Yandy Diaz has a sore hand that will cost him some time off.
Coming off a career year, Diaz can ill-afford to miss anytime if he’s looking to repeat last season’s heroics. It’s unclear exactly how he hurt himself, but he’s been out of action for quite some time, and he won’t even start swinging a bat until a week after his last game. Chances are, he is ready for Opening Day, but this is something to watch as it could signal a slow start to the season for him.
Cedric Mullins has a bad back.
Another Rays player hasn’t played since last Tuesday, but for Mullins, it’s because of a sore back. The good news is that he is feeling better, and it sounds like things will only get better from here. We should get more updates soon enough on how his body responded to this resumption of baseball activities, but chances are he continues to make progress toward Opening Day.
The Rays continue to be cautious with Chandler Simpson’s condition.
If anyone knows the inner-workings of the Rays, it’s Marc Topkin, so if he believes that Simpson will return soon, then chances are he will. That said, his extended absence and overly cautious approach to his running are noteworthy. It is also taking away from his development in the field, which could result in him being benched if his defense doesn’t improve in 2026.
Gavin Lux might be back soon, but Edwin Uceta looks to miss Opening Day.
Unfortunate news for Uceta, who was hoping to be the team’s closer this season. It’s unclear if his unreadiness for Opening Day is because of a setback, but the last report had it that time was running out for him to be properly ramped up. As for Lux, he is set to be the team’s everyday second baseman, and Tuesday’s Spring debut will be the first step in a long journey to maintain that role.
Bryce Miller threw a bullpen and felt great.
Miller threw 25 pitches at almost full intensity, and the fact that his oblique was not an issue is a great sign. How his body reacts in the coming days will be key, but it feels like he will be ready for either a larger workload or ramping up his intensity. All that said, he does have an extensive injury history that wasn’t necessarily corrected the right way, so he carries his own red flags to begin the season.
Ivan Herrera has knee inflammation.
Unfortunately, the article in question is paywalled, and I don’t have access to it. However, reading the reports from others, it states that Herrera will rest for 24-48 hours, and his status will be reevaluated then. Either way, this isn’t the best start for someone who is looking to stay healthy and make an impact all over the field.
Jackson Chourio should return to the lineup today.
Great news here after a scare the other day when Chourio got his by a pitch. Even if he’s not back in the lineup, chances are he’s close to full health.
Merrill Kelly is ready for another bullpen.
The even better news could be what happens after that, with the potential for him to play in a spring game. If that happens, there’s a chance that he avoids the Injured List and just starts for the Diamondbacks on the back-end of their rotation.
